It was really weird how when I first started listening, there was maybe 10% of the music that resonated with me and the rest I didn't really care for. Then I'd spend hours in my favorite independent record store looking at the track listings on punk albums trying to figure out who the bands were and what albums I wanted to buy. This was in the days before the Internet so I would take notes on which songs I liked, writing down what I thought the lyrics were and what the song titles might be based on the choruses. They rarely mentioned the names of the bands or the song titles on the air. I recorded every show on several cassette tapes. They had a punk show that they ran one night a week (Sunday?) for about 4 hours. EDIT: The station was out of Swarthmore, PA. When I was in high school, I lived in Southern NJ and I was able to get a radio station that I think was broadcast from a high school in either Philly or Delaware. There's plenty of room for 3 angry chords and a singer that really needs you to hear their message, and lots of times that message is "fuck anyone who wants to shit on something you enjoy." Love what you love. But not everything has to be that, either. I did grow up and grow out to love lots of other genres like I'm super into Polyphia and Animals as Leaders and all that fancy modern prog, I love classical and shreddy neo-classical too. There's just life to the music and it's addicting. The best thing about it is that whatever the song is about, anything at all, it's performed like they really fucking mean it Ian MacKaye truly believes you are not what you own, Henry Rollins wants to rise above, Jello really does think that nazi punks should fuck off. When it's done right, you can just feel the energy coming out of the speakers. Punk was probably my first love as far as "I like this genre." There's always been something about the way it sounds that just feels alive.
